报告题目:Terahertz Spectroscopy for Materials Research

Abstract:

Terahertz (THz) wave refers to electromagnetic radiation in the frequency interval from 0.1 to 10 THz. THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a powerful technique to study materials properties such as complex dielectric response and conductivity in the far-infrared spectral region, with the advantages of high signal-to-noise ratio, noncontact optical probe, and measuring the amplitude and phase of electric field simultaneously thus no requirement for Kramers-Kronig transformation. The optical pump-THz probe (OPTP) spectroscopy has recently emerged as a powerful technique to study the carrier dynamics of materials. In OPTP, the photon energy of THz probe is in the range of meV (1 THz = 4.1 meV), naturally matching the energy scale of elementary excitation in solids (i.e., excitons, phonons). THz spectroscopy shows its advantage for study the conductivity of nanostructures, because of no requirement for electrical contacts. In this talk, I will present THz spectroscopy study of some semiconductor nanostructures and novel materials, which are technologically important.

Short Biography:

Zhang Xinhai obtained his B. Sc. in Physics from Shandong University in 1989 and his M. Sc. in Condensed Matter Physics from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1992.   In 1999, he finished his Ph.D study in Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore and joined Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), A*STAR, Singapore, as a Research Associate. He was promoted to Research Scientist in 2001 and later Senior Scientist in IMRE, A*STAR. Recently he joined the South University of Science and Technology of China as a professor. His research interests include THz spectroscopy, ultrafast spectroscopy, optical spectroscopy, and first-principles studies of low dimensional semiconductors, nanostructures, and novel materials.  He has published more than 110 papers in peer-reviewed international journals including Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Nano Research, Nanoscale, Applied Physics Letters, and Optics Letters, with more than 2100 citations.
